Meet Some Of Our Dedicated Volunteers

Lionel

Volunteer since 2009

“Following early retirement, I started volunteering after a Driving Experience arranged by my wife. I’ve been a lifelong railway enthusiast and have worked as a Guard and Diesel Driver, assisted at Special Events, but now I spend most days volunteering with the Track Gang! The best bits are sharing my time with like minded enthusiasts, meeting visitors and drinking copious amounts of tea!”

Becca

Volunteer since 2022

"I love the amazing community of volunteers here and have made lots of great friends!

I have been coming to the ELMR since I was 3 years old.

It used to be a treat if I had been good or done well in school. Even now that I am a teenager I still love it!"

Simon

Volunteer since 2020

“After being invited to come for a day visit by a few friends who also volunteer at the ELMR, I soon joined the ranks as a Guard, Steam & Diesel Driver. Fast forward 5 years and I am now one of the railway’s Volunteer Coordinators, covering jobs such as inducting new volunteers, training new Steam Drivers and event planning. The team at the ELMR are a second family, and I have lifelong friends as a result.”

Our volunteers play a crucial role in looking after our visitors, maintaining locomotives, carriages, stations and track, and operating the railway safely.

Whilst many of our volunteers have an interest in railways, others get involved because they enjoy meeting our visitors and working alongside other volunteers.

Some of our volunteers have retired from full-time work and are seeking new ways to keep active and use their skills. Other spend time at the railway at weekends or during holiday periods, and enjoy doing something completely different to their day job.

The range of roles vary greatly and include:

  • Gardening

  • General Maintenance

  • Operations
